Sarah Gully On Housework

Sarah Gully On Housework post image

I’ve fallen a little behind on my blog posting schedule. It’s tempting – and true – to say that life has got in the way of art. I mean, just last night I had an unfortunate accident with a wok and boiling oil that left me in a lot of pain and reluctant to do much of anything.

Sarah GullyThis morning however I watched visual artist Sarah Gully on Art Nation. I was particularly impressed by her comments regarding housework.

Sarah Gully:

I have so many ideas that a lifetime isn’t enough to get them all down on paper and board. When Francis Bacon was asked how he was so prolific he said simply, “I don’t do housework.” And I thought at the time that’s it, I won’t do it either – I’ll just paint.

I’m reminded too of Gilbert and George and their decision not to have a kitchen in their house so they could focus on their art.

You can watch the whole video segment at Art Nation or find out more about Sarah’s latest exhibition at Red Gallery.
