David Kerr is one of my dearest friends. (Some of you might recall the video I made for his birthday.) This is the second time I’ve attempted to draw him and I am glad this one came out a lot better than the first attempt which was an unmitigated disaster.

If I’m being honest I don’t like my brushwork. I think it leaves a lot to be desired. So I decided to do this as a mixed media work. To be honest I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I started it and there has had some implications for how it ended up, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

This is only the second time I’ve tried using soft pastels. To be completely honest with you the last time left me feeling like I would never use them ever again. But actually with a little experimentation I’ve come to realise they’re a very versatile medium.
